Employer Assisted Housing

  • Policies to encourage employers to reward employees for living nearby, whether direct (subsidy based on distance) or indirect (rewards for not driving to work). Employees who live closer to work are more productive, and are less likely to leave the company (employee retention is very expensive). Home ownership is better for the community as it encourages investment in terms of both time and money.  A public-private partnership to encourage downtown firms to use these programs benefits not just companies and employees but downtown as a whole. DC has a program for public employees.

    • Increased percentage of employees living near work

      • Less traffic and pollution

      • Home ownership increases civic engagement and work productivity

      • More downtown residents/ neighborhood revitalization
